Project Narrative
Nestled within the natural beauty of Big Bear Lakes, this project reimagines a 1970s-era modern residence through a comprehensive renovation and expansion designed to create a timeless Modern Craftsman retreat. The design balances the character and scale of the existing home with a renewed architectural identity that embraces warmth, craftsmanship, and a stronger connection to the surrounding mountain landscape.
The project includes significant alterations to the existing residence, expanding key living spaces to better support contemporary family living and entertaining. The kitchen, living room, dining area, and entry sequence were thoughtfully enlarged and reconfigured to improve circulation, increase natural light, and create a more open and inviting interior environment. The redesigned floor plan enhances the relationship between indoor gathering spaces and the outdoor living areas, allowing the home to function as both a private retreat and a destination for family and guests.
A major component of the project is the addition of a detached two-car garage with a fully independent guest residence above. Designed to complement the primary home, the upper-level living quarters include two bedrooms, a full bath, kitchen, and living area, accessed through a dedicated private entry. This flexible living space provides accommodations for extended family, guests, or future multigenerational living while maintaining privacy and independence from the main residence.

Outdoor living was equally important to the overall vision. A new covered front porch establishes a welcoming arrival experience and reinforces the home's Modern Craftsman character through the use of natural materials, exposed structural elements, and carefully proportioned detailing. To the rear and side of the residence, expansive covered porch spaces extend the living environment outdoors, creating opportunities for year-round enjoyment of the mountain setting while strengthening the connection between architecture and nature.
The completed design transforms an aging modern structure into a warm, contemporary mountain home that respects its surroundings while providing the comfort, functionality, and flexibility required for modern living. Through thoughtful planning, carefully integrated additions, and a cohesive architectural language, the project creates a lasting residence that reflects both the spirit of Big Bear and the enduring appeal of Modern Craftsman design.
