Project Narrative

Loveless Porter Architects brought Rich Hostelley Architect on as Design Consultant to develop an exterior architectural vision for a new self-storage facility within a historic Old Town setting—transforming a traditionally utilitarian building type into a contextually responsive and visually integrated addition to the district.

While a functional floor plan had been established, the project required a cohesive exterior identity that would align with the character, scale, and architectural language of the surrounding historic fabric. RH+ARCH’s role focused on shaping the building’s massing, façade articulation, and material palette to ensure the facility contributes positively to its environment rather than detracting from it.

The design draws inspiration from early 20th-century warehouse architecture, referencing the industrial heritage common to many historic town centers. A composition of brick, EIFS, and strategically placed fenestration creates rhythm and depth across the façade, breaking down the scale of the building while reinforcing a familiar architectural vocabulary. Carefully proportioned openings and detailing introduce visual interest while maintaining the functional requirements of the facility.
