Project Narrative
This 3,200-square-foot single-family residence draws inspiration from the maritime heritage of the 19th century, reinterpreting the dignified character of historic ship captains’ homes through a distinctive octagonal form. Rooted in a building typology popularized for its efficiency, symmetry, and expansive views, the design merges historic precedent with contemporary craftsmanship and livability.
The architecture is defined by its balanced geometry and refined detailing. Symmetrical façades, traditionally proportioned windows, and carefully articulated trim establish a timeless language that references early American coastal residences. The octagonal plan enhances both form and function—introducing dynamic interior perspectives while allowing natural light to permeate the home throughout the day.
Encircling the structure is a generous wrap-around porch, conceived as an extension of the living environment and a defining element of the home’s character. Supported by period-inspired columns and detailed with traditional railings, the porch fosters a strong connection between interior and landscape, reinforcing a sense of openness, hospitality, and relaxed coastal living.
At the center of the composition, a cupola rises as both a functional and symbolic feature. Drawing from the imagery of a ship’s lookout or widow’s walk, it introduces natural light into the core of the home while serving as a prominent architectural focal point—visible from a distance and anchoring the building’s vertical expression.
The interior is organized to reflect the clarity and simplicity of historic residential planning while accommodating modern expectations for comfort and performance. Contemporary systems and energy-efficient strategies are seamlessly integrated, ensuring the home functions as effectively as it expresses its architectural heritage.
The result is a residence that thoughtfully bridges past and present—celebrating maritime tradition through form, proportion, and detail, while delivering a distinctive and highly livable home for today
